A Marvel-Inspired Quarantine Birthday Celebration from Dollar Tree

**This post is not sponsored by Dollar Tree. This is just my unbiased opinion on how I used their products to decorate for my son’s Marvel-themed birthday. I hope you find this helpful!!😀**

Birthday celebrations weren’t created to be socially distanced events…so when our oldest son’s birthday was getting close, I wasn’t exactly sure how we’d handle celebrating his birthday.

Birthdays are a huge deal to my son. He ADORES them!! Typically, he starts planning his birthday months in advance and talks about it all year long!

Yup, he’s that kid…

So, just imagine how my husband and I were scrambling to try and pull off a special birthday party in the midst of a global health crisis.

We were in unchartered territory here, folks!

I certainly had a challenge on my hands! I really wanted to make his birthday still feel special and exciting…especially since he had already been planning this day for a while now.

But…also knowing that it was just going to be our small family of four celebrating, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money or be wasteful with a bunch of decorations that we would never use again.

Now, both of my boys are huge Marvel fans. They have been working their way through all of the movies on Disney+. So, when I saw this comic superhero-themed birthday decor at the Dollar Tree, I knew that this would be the perfect solution for a quarantined birthday celebration.

The Dollar Tree had a nice collection of party supplies and many different designs and themes to chose from. Here’s what I ended up getting in the comic superhero theme:

  • superhero banner – $1
  • 2-packs of balloons – $2
  • curling ribbon – $1
  • two table clothes – $2
  • cake plates – $1
  • napkins – $1
  • plastic utensils – $1
  • 2 Marvel cups -$2
  • pack of crazy straws – $1
  • roll of wrapping paper – $1
  • Marvel gift bag – $1
  • curly bows – $1
  • red pompom banner – $1
  • 2 number candles – $2

I also grabbed a couple of Marvel T-shirts from Target – on sale for $6, for a total of $12.

Total for party decorations = $30

Not bad, right?! Read on to see how I set it all up…

Party Backdrop & Fun Photo Op

To set the scene for the party, I hung up this party backdrop banner first. This folded out easily and was light enough to hang up with just a few pieces of tape. I like to use the blue painter’s tape just to make sure that I don’t leave any marks on the wall.

How fun!

The banner was nice and big! The large size made it big enough to fill the wall space behind the dining room table. This added an awesome pop of color and created an exciting backdrop for the party.

To make the backdrop really stand out, I added some colorful balloons and curling ribbon around the top and the sides. I used the blue painter’s tape here as well.

Comic Superhero Backdrop

I was careful to place the tape strategically, so you don’t see it and also so that it wouldn’t clash with the decorations.

This fun wall also made for a playful photo op!

Marvel-Inspired Tablescape

Once the backdrop was hung, I then got to work setting up the birthday party table.

Because this was just for our small family of four, I kept this pretty simple…but the party supplies from the Dollar Tree still made it colorful and fun.

I really appreciated how long the plastic tablecloth was! We have a very large table in our formal dining room. This was the perfect size for the table. If you have a shorter table, this could be easily cut to fit. If you have a long table, the tablecloth was thin enough that you could layer these to fit the length that you needed.

Since we’re still in quarantine at home, my son requested Outback delivery for his birthday dinner. (Heck, I didn’t argue with that!) So I set out our regular dinner plates for our steaks but layered the superhero cake plates on top for the cake later. To complete the place settings, I used the coordinating napkins and plastic utensils. The fewer dishes and mess that I have to clean-up, the BETTER!!

The Dollar Tree had some really fun plastic character cups. I grabbed a couple of the Marvel ones, plus a pack of crazy straws. Both boys loved these, and these are also something that they can use even after the party.

If we were throwing a normal party and had party guests, these cups would make for some great party favors for your guests to take home with them!

Tommy made it very known that he wanted both cupcakes and cake for his birthday….cuz apparently that’s how we do birthdays around here! So, in keeping with the easy and simple theme, I just grabbed both of those from our local grocery store. Using a little white cake plate that I already had, I plopped the cupcakes on the stand and used these as the centerpiece of the table.

Yummy!! Store bought cupcakes make for an easy centerpiece.

Simple Decorated Sideboard

On the far right wall, we have a sideboard that I decided to use as a place to set up the cake and birthday presents. I used a second matching table cloth and draped it over the front of the sideboard.

I then set out his cake, candles, and birthday presents. All of the wrapping paper, ribbons, and the Marvel gift bag were also from the Dollar Tree. A few friends and family members sent him gifts in the mail, so I made sure to set these out. He was so surprised to see gifts from his grandparents and relatives from out of state!

The wrapping paper, bag, and curly bows worked out great for the comic superhero-themed bday bash!

Store bought cake and candles from the Dollar Tree…Easy!

The red pompom garland hanging above the presents was also a Dollar Tree find. These come in a back of three and added a fun punch of color. They also have larger ones that would be cute to hang as well.

Marvel T-Shirts from Target

For the boys’ previous birthdays, I normally get them a themed shirt to wear on their special day. This year I decided to do the same…and luckily found these Marvel superhero shirts at Target. These were on sale for $6 and they fit in perfectly with the decorations from the Dollar Tree!

My real life superheroes

POW!

A Very Happy Birthday Boy!

I ain’t gonna lie…celebrating birthdays and other special events COVID style is weird. We miss our family and friends and really wished we could have spent the day with them.

But, I think we pulled off a pretty fun and special day for our guy! He loved all of the superhero decorations, his Outback dinner, and of course, the cake and presents. And he really enjoyed opening the surprise gifts from his grandparents in Maryland. Just look at his face!!

As a busy mama, I loved that I was able to find everything that I needed at Dollar Tree and not have to spend a fortune. The money I saved could be used instead for a special dinner or event at Disney, as the parks are gearing to open back up soon! We can’t wait!!

He is unstoppable now!!

I hope you enjoyed checking out our Marvel-inspired birthday celebration! Hopefully, this gives you some ideas and inspiration for your next special event, especially if you’re wanting to keep it chill and on a budget.
